It was on the third check. Which was my check, and I went
and I discovered Madeline had been taken. [And I just ran to say “Not] Madeline, not Madeline, not Madeline”. I can just remember
saying that over, and over again.
(Oprah: Do you let yourself go to the worst place sometimes?)
I do. I think it's natural. I know people mean well when they say "Don't let yourself go there, and it's not going to help going there", but as a mom [inevitably there are times when I do].
There's been a time I thought about surrender.
(Oprah: In this past two year cycle,
so much has happened. What has been the worst for you? Were there times when you thought you wouldn't get through it?)
I
think nothing is going to be worse than those early days really. It was horrific. [It was awful. And I, I don't believe th]ere can
be a greater pain.
To be able admit that I am at all cause of it.

then I thought well maybe she's wondered through to our bed, and that's why the door's open. [So I went there through to our bedroom,
and she wasn't there]. And then I kind of, see that, I'm starting to panic a bit. And I ran back into their room and literally as
I went back into their room the curtains that were drawn over just flew open. And that's when I saw that the shutter was right
up and the window was pushed right open. And that was then I just knew someone had taken her.

Wasn't so much a conscious decision. After a few hours some of her friends were saying "Contact the media, contact
the media". Portuguese police were saying "No. No media, no media". We were [desperate at that point].
(Oprah: Well the tabloids used that press conference against the McCanns.
Saying Kate's lack of emotion implied that she was guilty. So, first of all tell us why you seemed not as emotional.)
There were two
aspects really. I'd [spent seventy two hours I think] crying, and suddenly you feel almost a little bit numb. It's really hard to
describe.

(Oprah: How has your marriage been through all of this? Because a lot of marriages, a lot of people get pulled apart.)
I
think a child abduction, I think could destroy any family. There' no doubt about it. It's one of the most devastating things,
and then if you looked what's happened subsequently that we've been sup[ported tremendously well]. And I think that's helped us stay
strong and together.
(Oprah: Her birthday is May 12th. will you celebrate that birthday?
Will there be an acknowledgement of that birthday?)
We haven't planned anything yet. [Certainly last year] we had a party.
[If I was so consumed with the], the pain and grief, I wouldn't be doing my job as a mother to Sean and Emily, and not
for Madeline.
